Causes of Neck Pain
It is quite common for
people to experience neck pain at some point in their life.
This can be caused from poor sleeping habits, using a low
quality pillow, or even poor posture. The most common type
of disorders of the neck are caused by trauma to the head,
neck or back resulting from an automobile accident, fall or
other physical strain. The damages can vary from short term
pain to long term pain that is debilitating.
The main patterns
for cause of neck pain are trauma, repetitive stress, and
postural stress. When these stresses persist,
inflammation is produced within the joint that creates a
joint restriction. The joint restriction is
what we take care of. Drugs, stretching, massage, or
surgery cannot reduce a joint restriction, they only cover
the problem.
When a person suffers a
strain they typically seek the advice of a physician, who
frequently prescribes rest, heat, and muscle relaxers.
While this can help with the pain, it often times does
nothing for the actual cause of the problem, which is why
many people decide to go to a chiropractor.
Other disorders of the neck can be related to the aging
process where the individual suffers degenerative
disorders. Over time the daily routine and stress of
working, lifting children, and other physical activity can
cause problems in the neck. This stress can result in
misalignments of the neck, resulting in referred pain as
well as other symptoms such as headaches and low back.
Other disorders include arthritis, osteoporosis, and
herniated discs, which can all be a cause behind neck
pain.
Depending on the source of the neck pain, chiropractic
treatments (known as spinal adjustments) can help to
correct any restrictions in the neck. By ensuring the
proper alignment of the neck and spine, there will be
greater movement of the spinal joints, which will help to
decrease any nerve pressure or irritation that may be
occurring. In fact, many patients report a
reduction of pain, headaches, and increased range of motion
after a single chiropractic adjustment.
Postural Causes
Posture plays a big role in
the cause of neck pain symdromes. If you sit at a
desk all day or stand in one place all day performing the
same task for eight to ten hours per day, you may be
putting a tremendous amount of stress on you joints and
muscles. This leads to changes over time causing
certain postural muscles to shorten and other muscles to
lengthen. If you take your hands and can feel tension
and tender points in the fleshy area that connects your
neck to your shoulder (the upper trapezius muscle) and
notice you have rounded forward shoulders you may have
what's called upper crossed
syndrome.
